HIT THE HILL LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

August 25, 2010

IMPORTANT MESSAGE . . .

. . . from NCISS Lobbyist Larry Sabbath

"Congress will return from its summer recess after Labor Day. This could be a crucial time for legislative activity relating to the investigative and security industries. Several bills affecting NCISS members remain under active consideration. These include bills limiting the use of telephone spoofing, data breaches, criminal histories, stalking, surveillance and Social Security numbers.

Hit The Hill September 28-30, 2010

The timing of the NCISS 'Hit the Hill' visits is fortuitous, as many of these bills are coming to a head at this time. Congress will be busy between Labor Day and early October when they will break in order to campaign. However, a more dangerous scenario is also developing. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D- NV) has announced that there will be a 'lame duck' session after the election starting on November 15. Because that will occur before a more than likely conservative group takes office in January, it will be seen as a last chance by some to enact controversial legislation."

Most associations are gearing up to protect the interests of their members during this time. We're fortunate that NCISS members will be making our views known in Washington D.C. in late September. We encourage everyone who can, to make the trip to DC. But, if you are not able to do so, try to see your elected officials during the next two weeks in their local offices. If you set an appointment to do so, contact NCISS Washington Advocate Larry Sabbath at lsabbath@lobbyist4u.com and he will suggest which issues to discuss with your members of Congress.

Keeping the profession informed,

Jimmie Mesis, LPI
NCISS Legislative Chairman
